A propos Showalter, she writes in her book on campus novels that she considers Trollope's Barchester novels to be the first campus novels. Whatever one thinks of the truth or falsity of this remark as a matter of literary history, one must admit this suggests an interesting picture of the nature of the university!

See, Showalter is right -- anxiety dreams just come with the profession. I'm glad to hear it! Thanks for sharing yours, New Kid and Sjoerd!

My worst nightmare about teaching involves completely mute students staring incredulously at me when asked a question. If this sounds suspiciously like real life, I suppose it is.

Somebody (was it Churchill?) said that if they wanted him to talk for half an hour he needed a week's preparation, for an hour, three days. If they wanted him to talk for four hours he could start immediately. I suppose teaching is like that.

Glad you liked the post! (I found your link to it via technorati.) It's all due to the great comments. Anyway, FWIW, I regularly dream that it's the first day of class (that I'm teaching) and I have simply forgotten to attend! I figured it was an achievement when I started dreaming about missing class as the professor rather than as the student. ;-)

So dreams where you forget to attend an important class or can't find the classroom aren't just limited to students! How funny! :-)
